About SARBC

Home

It all starts with an idea.

In 1983 a new group was formed to help saves lives by promoting the exchange of information, developing new search techniques, speeding up the search and analysis process and to show why planning information is so important.

The founding beliefs remain today.

The goals and objectives of the Society are:
  • Maintain a specialized overhead management team
  • Research and analysis
  • Provide information/expertise to any SAR group
  • Develop training courses in modern SAR techniques
  • Promote the exchange of information between SAR groups in B.C., Canada and the U.S.
  • Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR)

SARBC is a non-profit, professional, uniformed organization which is funded by corporate sponsors, service clubs and contributions from the general public. An Operations Center is located in Victoria for all land and inland water requests. Assistance offered to SAR Groups, Law Enforcement agencies and Missing Childrens Organizations is provided by the Society through the Overhead Management Team, or by the Special Services Unit (SSU)for physical response. For an external request, the Overhead Management team provides analysis and recommendations only. A second opinion, if you will. For an internal response (SARBC is lead agency), the Overhead Management Team is responsible for all aspects of managing the Incident. Everything from interviews to incident command to base camp operations and logistics is covered by the team. The Overhead Management Team does NOT assume the role of Management during an external response request. Seldom does the Overhead Management Team arrive on scene. We are set up to respond from our Victoria Base using modern communications equipment to direct the data to be analyzed from the field.

Response (Field) Assistance is provided by the SSU.
